Who we are

FindPlates is a UK-based independent specialist in private number plates, incorporated as FindPlates Ltd (Company No. 17091909, registered in England and Wales). We are a DVLA-recognised reseller, giving our customers direct access to thousands of personalised registrations across every style — from dateless cherished plates to current-format registrations.

We are not part of the DVLA. All registrations are sourced directly from the official DVLA database and are subject to standard DVLA transfer rules and eligibility checks. The £80 DVLA transfer fee is included in every plate price shown on the site — there are no hidden extras.

Why we built FindPlates

Buying a private number plate should be simple. For years, the market has been dominated by large incumbents with outdated search tools that return thousands of irrelevant results. If you want a plate that spells your name, you shouldn't have to scroll through pages of near-misses to find it.

FindPlates was built around a smarter search engine. Our matching algorithm reads plates the way people do — recognising that 4 looks like A, 3 looks like E, 0 looks like O, and 1 looks like I. When you search for a name or word, the most relevant plates come first. Every result is scored for how closely it matches your search, not just whether it contains the right characters.

We also stream results live as they're found, rather than making you wait for a full search to complete. It's a meaningfully better experience — and we think the numbers prove it.

What we offer

• Dateless plates — no year identifier, suitable for any vehicle of any age. From cherished short combinations to longer personalised registrations.
• Prefix plates — issued 1983–2001. Single year letter at the front, great for spelling names and initials.
• Suffix plates — issued 1963–1983. Classic format with the year letter at the end. Increasingly rare and collectible.
• Current style plates — issued since September 2001. The most affordable and widely available style. Modern look, huge choice.
• Live DVLA auction listings — we track DVLA auctions so you can monitor plates coming to market before they're widely listed.
• Physical plates — we can manufacture and post road-legal physical plates to your door.
• Managed transfer service — we handle all DVLA paperwork from start to finish on your behalf.

How transfers work

Once you purchase a registration through FindPlates, we manage the entire DVLA transfer process. You'll need to provide your V5C (log book), a valid MOT certificate if applicable, and current road tax. We submit the documentation to the DVLA and liaise with them directly until the transfer is confirmed.

Online transfers typically complete the same day. Postal transfers take 10–15 working days. If you're not ready to assign the plate to a vehicle immediately, it can be held on a DVLA V778 retention certificate for up to 10 years — ideal if you're between cars or buying as a gift.

Our commitment to transparency

Every plate price on FindPlates includes the DVLA's £80 transfer fee. We are not VAT-registered, so you won't see VAT added at checkout. The price you see is the price you pay.

We believe in straightforward pricing and honest communication. If a plate has age eligibility restrictions, we tell you upfront. If a transfer is likely to take longer than usual, we'll flag it before you buy.

We are not affiliated to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, and DVLA is a registered trade mark of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
